A Message from the President of Council
On behalf of Aurora City Council I welcome you to our website. We believe you will find our online services and information to be a valuable resource. The purpose of our webpage is to provide a venue for quick and accurate information to the interested public. Please know that City Council and the Clerk of Council’s office will continue to be available to address your specific needs and concerns in person or by phone. We do not consider the webpage to be a substitute for quality and efficient constituent work.

As the legislative arm of Aurora City government, the chief function of City Council is the making of laws. While serving as the city’s lawmaking body, Council also monitors the operation and performance of the city budget. In addition, Council members serve as their constituents’ links to their local government. When a constituent has a question or concern with city policy or services, they are encouraged to contact their ward Council representative, or any Council at Large member.

 Facts About City Council
  • The City of Aurora is a Mayor-Council form of government, and a chartered municipality. The Council functions as the legislative body of the City, and the Mayor oversees the administrative branch of the City as Chief Executive Officer. By Charter, the City Council exercises such responsibilities as adopting ordinances and resolutions governing local law, approving the City's annual budget, approving recommendations from the various boards, committees and commissions of the City, as well as addressing the concerns of their constituents.

  • Aurora City Council consists of nine members, who are elected from a total of six wards. Three of the members serve at-large, and represent the entire community. Each of the remaining members represent one of the six wards. Council members serve four year terms, staggered evey other election year, with five Council members elected in one election year, and four Council members and the Mayor elected in the other election year.

  • Every two years, the sitting Council members elect a President of Council, who presides over all Council meetings, and retains the right to vote as a Councilman. By Charter, in the absence of the Mayor, the President of Council serves as acting Mayor.

  • City Council also appoints a Clerk of Council, and any deputies, every two years. The Clerk of City Council has custody of the records of the municipality, and serves at the pleasure of Council, and as outlined in the laws of the State of Ohio, the City Charter and the Aurora Codified Ordinances.

  • Aurora City Council meets the second and fourth Mondays of every month. All agendas and approved legislation are posted at City Hall, the Aurora Post Office, the Aurora Library, Heinen's Grocery Store, and Fire Station No. 2. Copies are also available in the Clerk of Council's office.
