Bicentennial Celebration

As part of the Portage County Bicentennial Celebration, the Bicentennial Committee has recommended honoring outstanding citizens who lived in the community and are buried in local cemeteries.  Working with our staff and Richard Fetzer, historian, we have submitted three names: Mr. Ebenezer Sheldon, 1754-1825, founder of Aurora; Mr. Charles R. Harmon, 1811-1902, leading merchant and State of Ohio Legislator; Mr. John I. Eldridge, 1896-1986, Aurora Mayor 1956-1959, a leader who moved Aurora Township to the City of Aurora.

We will honor these three outstanding men at the Aurora Cemetery on Saturday, May 17 at 11:00a.m.  There will be a recognition service conducted at each grave site.  Mr. Richard Fetzer, Landmark Chairman and Councilman at-Large John Kudley, the Mayor and others will be participating.  Please plan to attend this memorial event.

At 10:30a.m., our Aurora scouting program will participate in the mounting if 240 American Flags at the cemetery as they have in past years.

  Clock Tower Project

At the most recent Landmark Commission meeting here in Aurora , Mayor McGill presented plans for the beautification in the Historic District. His plan would build a clock tower at the intersection of routes 43 and 306. This location is west of the Bicentennial Gazebo and north of City Hall on a overgrown parcel of city property.  This proposal was tabled until the next scheduled meeting on March 15, 2007.

The patio portion of the project was designed by Cawrse & Associates and Dennis Altman, City Field & Grounds Coordinator, will build it. The cost of materials is $15,000 and is in the 2007 city budget.

The clock tower portion was designed by the Verdin Company and will cost $130,000 for the steel framing and the clock, the brick and limestone covering will be applied by local craftsmen–brick masons–estimated cost $50,000.  The total of $180,000 will be donations from organizations and individuals—$1,000 donation paid for 1/3 each year for three years.

Below are images of the clock tower project proposal.
