  General Information
Permits are issued for residential or commercial/ industrial uses on the basis of what type and extent of work is to be done.  The time needed to issue a permit varies based on what reviews need to be done by which City departments and boards.  Miscellaneous permits for smaller repairs and replacement of roofs, siding, hot water tanks, and such items can be issued at our counter the same day.

  Permit Types and Forms
Select from the list below to find out what needs to be submitted to apply for a permit for a specific type of project.  Each one provides a list of which City reviews are required for the project, what items need to be included with the application, and a form which can be downloaded and turned into our office once completed

  When Permits are Required
Permits are required for all new construction, remodeling, renovation, demolition, major repair, moving of structures, occupancy, and any other work except minor repairs and finish work in or on all commercial, industrial, and residential structures. All contractors must be registered to work in the City. Obtaining a permit will help ensure that the work is completed correctly and safely.

  Permit Time Limits
Residential permits are good for one year from the date of issuance; commercial permits do not have an expiration date. Residential permits become invalid if work is not commenced within six months; for commercial permits the period is twelve months. Both types of permits become invalid if work is suspended for six months after work is begun. In all such instances extensions may be granted.
