 Special Note on Trash and Recycling Programs

 

 

IMPORTANT FACTS REGARDING THE TRASH AND RECYCLING PROGRAMS!

The City has contracted with J&J Refuse, Inc. for the removal of trash,  and 
Portage County Recycling Center for the removal of certain recyclables.  The contract is effective January 1, 2007 - December 31, 2011.  The fees shall remain constant throughout the contract! 
  •     Households must contact each entity separately  to register for its service. 
  •     The two companies coordinate pick up schedules on the same day.
  •     Households shall direct complaints or concerns to the appropriate company.
  •     J&J Refuse bills quarterly; the Recycling Center bills once per year 
  •   See the information below for trash and recycling guidelines!
     
     Recycling Pick Up

     

    Per City Ordinance 1997-37, all residential households must participate in the City's system of collection and disposal of recyclable materials. 

    The City entered into a 5-year contract with the Portage County Recycling Center.   Each new household is responsible for registering to commence service.  Each household shall receive two recycling bins.   The bins are the property of the City and should remain the property.  Listed below are the acceptable items for the City's program and the method to be used.   

    The fee shall be $39.48 and one invoice will be sent to each household in the spring of each year 2007 - 2011.  If the amount due is not paid by due date, the fee shall be assessed to the property tax.

    • Use the green bins provided.
    • Place recyclables at curb before 7 am. on the day of scheduled pick up.
    • Holiday Pick Up Delay on New Years, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
    • Make payment timely; fee shall be assessed to property tax if not paid by due date.    One annual invoice ($31.80 per contract) is sent in the spring to the household or pro-rated for new customers during the year.  
    • Call Customer Service for direction on disposal of hazardous or items not listed on the List below, and to register complaints and concerns.

    - Newspapers: loose
    - Cardboard, flattened,
          no larger that 3' x 3'
    - Junk mail/office paper: Contain in brown
          bag
    - Catalogs, magazines, phone books: loose
    Acceptable Plastics, Cans, Bottles, Glass
    #1 and #2 Plastics: rinsed, remove lids, crush
    Aluminum and tin cans, rinsed, labels on
    Glass bottles and jars, rinsed

     

    The following are not acceptable items and should not be placed in the bins:
            • #3 - #7 plastics
            • motor oil containers or chemical containers
            • window glass
            • ceramics or lightbulbs
            • scrap metal
            • aerosol cans/paint cans
            • trash
            • tires
            • gooey pizza boxes
            • juice boxes or milk cartons
            • paper plates or cups
            • waxy or foil covered cardboard

    Per City Ordinance 1997-38, all residential households that require trash removal must utilize the City’s designated trash hauler!! J&J Refuse, Inc., is the designated trash hauler for residential trash pick up. Each household is responsible for registering and selecting a level of service suitable to its needs. There are 3 levels of service to choose from:

    Bag Service
    $21.80 for 10 bags
    $36.30
     60-Gallon Service
    $31.80 / quarter
                 $38.85 
      Super Service
     $33.27 / quarter

    • 30-gallon bags are pre-printed with "J&J Refuse" logo
    • Those who require infrequent pick up may consider this service
    • Households may contact J&J directly to order the bags when needed. The bags are delivered via U.S. mail
    • Provides the disposal of up to 60-gallons of trash.
    • There is an additional charge for the disposal of any bulk item with this level of service.

    • Provides the disposal of up to 15, 30-gallon bags (or equivalent) of trash PLUS the removal of certain *bulk items.

     

     GUIDELINES  - TRASH PICK UP

    Use proper containers and bags. Metal and/or plastic cans with lids, barrels; sealed plastic bag with a mil thickness of at least 1.5, with a maximum capacity of 30-gallons per bag. No container or bag shall weight more than 50 pounds and cardboard boxes are not acceptable containers.

    • Place trash at curb before 7 am. on the day of scheduled pick up.
    • Holiday Pick Up Delay on New Years, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
    • Make payment timely to prevent disconnection of service.
    • Call Customer Service for direction on disposal of hazardous or items not on *bulk item list, and to register complaints and concerns. 
    The following lists the certain bulk items included in the contract as no cost to
     Super Service level. Otherwise, the cost is indicated for other levels of service.
